The soffit gap

Where the soffit meets the roof line there is often a small continuous gap left by construction tolerance or by movement over time. On Lakeland's older wood framed housing that gap widens as the structure settles, and it runs the length of the eave, which gives a colony a long sheltered entry with easy flight access.

This is the entry point found most often on local jobs because it is the one homeowners cannot see from the ground and does not read as damage from inside the attic.

Finding the active run

Not every gap is in use. The active ones show staining and rub marks where bodies pass repeatedly against the edge, and droppings accumulate on the wall or ground directly below. Identifying which runs are active matters, because those are the openings that receive one way doors while everything else is sealed first.
