Water, canopy and insects

The Lake Morton district combines open water with a mature oak canopy and a concentration of older homes. Insect activity over the water after dusk is heavy through the warm months, and that food supply sits within a very short flight of the surrounding rooflines.

A roost does not need to be large to be a problem here, because the conditions support it returning season after season once the building has been used.

Older lakefront housing

Much of the housing around the lake dates to the same period as the rest of Lakeland's historic core, so the entry points follow the same pattern of settled eaves and failed vent screening rather than tile roof voids.
